Getting a good night’s sleep as we get older becomes more important than ever. But how exactly does one get the desperate rest that they are in wanton need of?

When we were kids, we never wanted to go to bed. We wanted to stay up, coloring, watching movies, or doing whatever it was we were doing–we just didn’t want to bed down for the night. Bed was boring. Bed was lame. We resisted.

Now that we’re adults, we laugh dryly as we chug our fifth cup of coffee. We never seem to get enough sleep. We wish we could go back to bed as soon as we get up. We might even be curled up in bed for over 8 hours a night, but we don’t feel as rested as we should. Healthy sleep is part of a healthy life, and getting proper rest can help us feel energized throughout the day. If you could use more energy, and more mental clarity, you might be in need of some extra sleep.

One recent Sleep Statistics guide worth checking out – provides in-depth information about the potential consequences of missing sleep, as well as insight into how much we need throughout our lifetimes.

Without further ado, here are a few of the ways you could get a better rest each night.

Getting a good night’s sleep might involve better bedding….

Better Bedding
You wouldn’t set out to sea on a leaky boat. You wouldn’t race in a faulty car. While sleep may not seem as important as a sea voyage or Nascar race, it plays a huge role in your ability to function. If your bed is your vehicle into the Land of Nod, it should be a good one. We often choose our bedding based off of price or aesthetic, but we should think of it in more scientific terms. A johns hopkins sleep study found that your bedding (especially your pillow) influences how well you sleep at night. If it’s time for a bedding upgrade, try a new pillow, a new mattress, or new sheets–or all three.

Getting a good night’s sleep might also mean better organizing one’s room….and the mood.

Better Room

Is your room a great place for sleeping? Is it a quiet room, filled with peaceful colors and a soothing scent? Does it readily block outside light and dampen outside noises? If not, you might want to think about upgrading your room. Blinds or plantation shutters in Melbourne can finally help you get rid of that morning glare, and you can install noise dampening pads disguised as art.

If your bedroom is the least decorated room in your home or apartment–just a white-walled space where you crash–you may want to consider personalizing it. Bright red walls aren’t going to help you fall asleep at night, but a soothing color might. Color affects our moods, so getting a color that helps you feel peaceful could improve your nightly rest.

While there are many ways to encourage sleep (like decreasing blue light before bed, getting regular exercise, and lowering stress) there are a few ways to encourage rest just by updating your bedroom. Better blinds could keep you from waking up when the sun rises, and a better pillow could keep your from waking up with aches and pains. When it comes to better sleep, taking action is worth it, so if you think you could benefit from a better night’s rest, start remodelling your bedroom–with sleep in mind.
