What led to Amanda Clairmont a 21 year old senior student at University of North Texas being fatally shot at an abandoned parking lot in Corinth, Texas?

Authorities in the rural Texas town of Corinth are confounded as to what led to Amanda Clairmont a 21 year old senior student at University of North Texas being fatally shot over the weekend.

WFAA-TV reported Clairmont, a religious studies major being found unresponsive inside her car in a vacant parking lot on a service road alongside the I-35E highway at around 6am on Sunday.

‘[Her car] was parked up against the fence, lights on, passenger door was opened,’ Lt. Jim Gregg of the Corinth police told KXAS-TV.

‘This is our first homicide investigation in 17 years.’

The girl’s death has led to family and friends now wondering who wanted Clairmont dead, with the killer thought to be at large. It wasn’t immediately clear what may have led to the senior making her way at the abandoned parking lot where she was killed.

To date authorities have yet to say whether Clairmont had been specifically targeted or the victim of a random shooting.

Amanda Clairmont UNT senior student outpouring of grief follows as answers are sought:

Responding to the college student’s shooting death, UNT President Neal Smatresk issued a statement saying, ‘Our deepest, heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of UNT student Amanda Clairmont,’

Adding, ‘Our hearts are heavy with the news of the tragic loss of her life.’

At the time of her death, Clairmont was on target to graduate in the upcoming spring.

Corinth, a town whose population is 21,000 people, is a thirty-minute drive from Dallas

The investigation is being overseen by the Texas Rangers and the Denton County Sheriff’s Department.

On social media, friends and family expressed anguish and grief over Clairmont’s loss.

‘If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them,’ her father, David Clairmont, tweeted on Sunday.

‘I LOVE YOU AMANDA.’

‘I’m so sorry of what happened to Amanda!’ Bobby Baughman tweeted.

‘I’ve heard how it happened, but I’m praying for u guys!! stay strong! Amanda will be In my heart! She’ll be missed!! we’ve had memories together and I want to share them with y’all!! Bc I miss her too!’

Baughman attached a collage of images showing him and Clairmont together. 

Police can’t, or won’t, say what might have been the motive for the killing.
