Famous Hookah Smokers
The rise of the hookah and the famous individuals who have taken up its cause ….

Hookah is a type of stemmed instrument used for smoking tobacco. Instead of burning it with fire and inhaling the smoke, one smokes the ‘shisha’ by passing it through a water basin. The shisha is usually flavoured tobacco and its popularity has led to many hookah smoking houses, or lounges, opening up around the world. In these establishments you can try many different flavours.

History of Hookah

The origins of Hookah are still debated. Most, however, believe that it dates back to the 1500s in Persia. However, Hookah was a joint effort, as tobacco was introduced by the Europeans, although it was the Persians who first started smoking it from the Hookah pipes and flavouring it through water.

The Celebs

If you’re still not sure if you wish to try Hookah, why not have a look at the following celebrities who have all been seen smoking a Hookah pipe or you could check this site out which has an abundance of tips and advice for Hookah smokers.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has been a household name for many years now, however in recent times her fame has skyrocketed due to her big music hits and her larger than life off stage antics (and sometimes on stage). Menace or superstar? It doesn’t matter; she’s making tonnes of money. What is she spending this money on? Well the usual celebrity vices, fast cars, fashion, etc, however she’s also putting some of it too good use as she’s been snapped smoking shisha.

Mike Tyson

In between punching people in the face and providing humorous cameos in the Hangover franchise, Mike Tyson enjoys a spot of Hookah smoking. He was seen smoking in a Hookah lounge in Las Vegas whilst on the set of The Hangover.

Top Gear

Recently, Top Gear UK was named as the most popular television show in the world and with good reason; it’s hilarious. Its popularity has been proven ten times over as well. All you have to do is watch their specials and see the adoration the people have for these three funny old men (Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May).

They have one of the best jobs in the world as they’re flown around the globe to drive fast cars in some of the most picturesque places on the planet, for example within the past few years they have been to Italy, Burma, and the Middle East and it was here that they settled down to sample the finest Middle Eastern product – Shisha.

Shaquille O’Neal

Basketball isn’t big in Europe and only really has maintained popularity in the US of A, however even Europeans have heard of ol’ Shaq. He is one of the most famous basketball players in the world and is a famous fan of Hookah smoking. He lives in Miami and can often be seen there sampling what’s on offer in the local Hookah lounges. If you head over there you might even be able to see him do his Hookah trick.

Caterpillars

‘She stretched herself up on tiptoe and peeped over the edge of the mushroom and her eyes immediately met those of a large blue caterpillar that was sitting on the top with its arms folded quietly smoking a long hookah and taking not the smallest notice of her or of anything else.’

Okay, so maybe not all caterpillars like to smoke a hookah (I’m sure some prefer cigarettes), but Lewis Carroll’s surly blue one from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland certainly does. To be honest I think I’d be smoking lots from a Hookah if I had to live in a land populated with disappearing cats, talking rabbits, and dictator queens.

The image of the Hookah smoking caterpillar has been further immortalised in the song ‘White Rabbit’, taken from Jefferson Airplane’s 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow.
