Swedish researchers have gone on to announce that they are now capable of detecting drugs like marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and prescription pills simply by breathalyzing subjects. That’s right you can now look forward to authorities breathalyzing you for the good shit too.
Researchers recruited 47 subjects from a Stockholm drug emergency clinic, and used blood and urine samples as a baseline. All in all, the Swedish scientists were able to identify 12 different drugs using a cheap, commercial breathalyzer called SensAbues, that they made themselves.
Drugs ingested into the body tend to infiltrate a delicious-sounding substance called the “airway lining fluid.” When drug users exhale, they spew out tiny particles from this fluid – and this is where the researchers found a motherload of 12 brain-twisting compounds:
Alprazolam and benzoylecgonine were detected in exhaled breath for the first time, whereas for methadone, amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, morphine, 6-acetylmorphine, tetrahydrocannabinol, buprenorphine, diazepam and oxazepam, the results confirmed previous observations.
Of interesting note is that the breathalyzer detected these drugs more than 24 hours after use. Nevertheless lead researcher Professor Olof Beck went on to offer the science is still imperfect and researchers also reported a 23 percent false positive rate. Plus, they ran into low detection rates with benzodiazepines.
Will you still be getting high in public? Of course you will….
