Katie Holmes divorce: Church of Scientology denies it’s watching Katie.

In the wake of the news that Katie Holmes has sought a divorce from her husband of 5 and half years, Tom Cruise, speculation is mounting as to the nature of the divorce, especially given both actor’s curt responses to the media who have been desperate to get to the bottom of the latest Hollywood break up.

The latest theory (could it really be true and does Tom Cruise have a secret agenda we don’t know about?) has it that Katie Holmes is being followed by Scientologists, the ultra out there religious cult that Tom Cruise had Katie sign up for. For those of you who don’t know, the religion preaches the notion that humans are the descendants of extraterrestrials that once came to earth….

tmz: Katie Holmes believes Scientology now views her as a threat to the organization and has put a team on her tail … sources close to the actress tell TMZ.

We’re told Katie believes in recent weeks — as the discord between her and Tom Cruise grew — Scientology has been following her moves, especially in New York City.

This does not appear to be the mind of a paranoid person. People who have photographed Katie multiple times tell TMZ there have been several “mysterious” men and vehicles around Katie’s apartment and following her when she’s out.

Paranoia? Mysterious men who may just instead by mysterious paparazzi? And what would Tom Cruise or Scientologists gain from having Katie Holmes followed? Or is this really just Katie Holmes losing her mind or even more scarier on to something that most of us could never envisage?

But perhaps in order to answer the following questions an examination of events leading up to Ms Holmes seeking divorce may help:

mirror.co.uk: The high-profile split is widely believed to have been sparked by Katie, 33, growing tired of her husband’s devotion to controversial cult Scientology.

Sole custody would allow her to remove Suri from the church’s activities.

It would also give her the power to remove the six-year-old from a Scientology-influenced school in California where, it is reported, she attends.

But lawyers yesterday insisted Katie will not be able to use Tom’s devotion to Scientology as an argument in court, and will instead be forced to reveal specific examples of behaviour which she feels is detrimental to Suri’s upbringing.

Despite converting to Scientology in 2005 before marrying Minority Report star Tom, Katie has not been seen attending the church for several years and is said to have become deeply wary and mistrusting of their beliefs.

Not attending church, mistrustful? Surely Tom Cruise would have noticed all of the above and had made an issue of it? And even more bizarrely, if Katie Holmes had begun doubting the cult, why hadn’t the cult started following her much earlier or even reached out to Tom and tried to warn him of her wayward ways?

As lawyers, paparazzi, bloggers and possible mystery Scientologists have marked their x on the ground Mr Cruise in a bid to save face has instructed lawyers to deal with Katie in a respectful manner.

Ultimately though one is left to wonder if the whole marriage was a bizarre arrangement that had outrun its course, with roving paparazzi, strange men who may or may not be Scientologists mysteriously lurking in the background, fans who became more important than the spouses themselves and a trick plot that may have been too perfect for the average movie goer but impossibly unbearable for an unwittiing actress who for a moment seriously believed she had married the man behind Tom Cruise as opposed to the enigma of Tom Cruise…
