A former long time exotic dancer and NYC mother of five has been identified as the individual found stuffed in a trash can in Brooklyn last week.
Tanaya Campbell Ortiz, 38, of Hollis, Queens, was identified on Tuesday as the woman officers discovered deceased and wrapped in blankets inside a trash receptacle at Plumb Beach in Sheepshead Bay on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Authorities have yet to classify the woman’s death a homicide pending the result of an autopsy. NYPD officials said Ortiz was found with bruising, but it was not severe enough to have killed her.
Exotic dancer’s death leaves estranged husband shocked
Her husband Mike Ortiz — who has been living in Florida since the couple separated more than a decade ago, questioned the circumstances surrounding his estranged wife’s death.
Not immediately clear is how Ortiz may have ended up in the trash can and who may have wrapped her up and whether they were involved in her death. The NYPD pending the results of a medical examiner’s response declined to provide a description pf a possible suspect.
The estranged husband said Campbell Ortiz’s death came ‘out of nowhere,’ and that he was planning on coming to New York City to rally all her children together to find out more about her final days.
‘She would never abandon her children, ever. She will never just get up and disappear,’ Ortiz told the Gothamist. ‘There’s something more deeper that’s going on.’
After years without communicating much, Ortiz said he and his wife started texting again this spring – making plans for Ortiz to come to New York to visit their 18-year-old daughter, whom he had not seen since she was a baby.
‘I wasn’t really noticing any red flags,’ the ex told the outlet.
New boyfriend and unreturned phone calls…
Ortiz said that his estranged wife had most recently been working as an exotic dancer – something she had been doing for years after some modeling jobs. He said he’d also heard that she was dating someone new, but he didn’t know many details about that relationship.
Ortiz said the last two messages he tried sending his wife in July and August went unanswered.
‘It’s not making sense,’ he told the outlet.
News of Ortiz’s sudden death led to One of her daughters, Julissa Hernandez, organizing a GoFundMe to raise money for her mother’s funeral.
‘Tanaya had not been herself recently, so seeing all of this unfold is hard to even understand, especially because we had just recently seen or spoken with her,’ she wrote. ‘The shock of losing her this way has left our family heartbroken and struggling to face what comes next.’
