An Indiana mother with a history of alleged drinking issues is facing neglect charges following the drowning death of her 3-year-old son over the weekend.
Amie Jo Farber, 41, of Evansville, IN, was found passed out drunk after first responders arrived at a home following a call about a child being found face down and unresponsive in a swimming pool.
Following her arrest, Farber was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail, Saturday night and charged with neglect resulting in death, 14News reported.
Mom drinks five 25-ounce beers before passing out near swimming pool where 3-year-old son found facing down
The mom is alleged to have drank about five 25-ounce beers over the course of roughly two hours while visiting a friend’s home with toddler son, Jaxton, Saturday afternoon.
According to police, Farber had asked the homeowner if she and Jaxton could use the pool. The homeowner agreed but specifically told her to keep a close eye on the child.
About two hours later, witnesses reportedly discovered Farber asleep in a patio chair surrounded by empty beer cans while Jaxton was floating motionless in the pool. One person pulled Jaxton from the water and immediately began CPR as another called 911.
During the emergency call, someone could repeatedly be heard yelling Farber’s name in an attempt to wake her. Another woman reportedly yelled that Farber was ‘passed out drunk.’
Previous drinking episode involving child
When officers arrived, they said they saw Farber throwing empty beer cans into the trash and appeared intoxicated. At the hospital, Farber reportedly told police she ‘must have fallen asleep’ but could not say how long she had been unconscious. She also told investigators, ‘this is all my fault,’ without providing additional details.
Police obtained a warrant to test Farber’s blood for alcohol and drugs.
Farber was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail Saturday night and charged with neglect resulting in death. She is being held on a $25,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
But there’s more.
Farber also had a previous arrest involving allegations of being intoxicated while caring for an infant. In 2023, a family member reportedly found her drunk while she was caring for a baby.
Police said Farber attempted to take the infant for a walk in a stroller but lost her balance and passed out on the ground. After waking, she allegedly threatened a family member who was holding and feeding the baby.
Officers said Farber resisted arrest and spit at police during that incident.
It remains unclear whether the infant involved in the 2023 case was Jaxton.
