Sometimes all the answers are there in plain sight… A Colorado man accused of killing his wife and whose body was found close to the family home some 3 years after disappearing in 2020 was arrested in a hit and run.
Barry Morphew, 58, was taken into custody on Thursday, September 3rd, just after 9 p.m., on an outstanding warrant for violating the terms of his release after allegedly being involved in a hit and run incident in August.
Husband who denies killing wife involved in Denver, Colorado hit and run
According to a release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Morphew was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant from Alamosa County for failing to comply with the terms of his release in relation to his wife’s murder.
In June 2025, Morphew was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, a mom of two who vanished on Mother’s Day 2020 and whose body was found three years later in a shallow grave in Moffat — less than an hour from the family’s Salida home, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Morphew pleaded not guilty to murder and has denied any involvement in her death. The husband and father is set to go on trial next year, People Mag reports.
As part of the conditions of his release on a $3 million bond, he was placed under GPS monitoring and allowed to leave home only for work.
Hit and run just a coincidence and no bearing on guilt of wife’s murder?
Alamosa County District Attorney Anne Kelly filed a motion to modify Morphew’s bond after GPS data from Aug. 28 allegedly revealed that he drove to Denver International Airport despite only having permission to leave home for work.
His attorney ‘indicated’ that Morphew was not working at the airport but that it was possible he was picking up his daughter which, the district attorney noted, is still a violation of his bond, the filing states.
Morphew left home for the airport around 10 a.m., arrived at 11:45 a.m. and then immediately left, according to the filing. He was near an area with hotels and a mall before entering another area where the alleged hit-and-run took place.
Under the terms of his bond, which was set last year, Morphew is required to wear a GPS monitor and is only allowed to leave his home for a medical emergency, doctor’s appointment, legal matter or work.
Hit and run driver sought to give driver $300
The alleged hit-and-run came to light when ‘a concerned citizen’, identified as the aggrieved party in the hit and run, reached out to authorities after the incident.
Morphew was allegedly seen driving aggressively before hitting two vehicles, ABC News reported.
‘During the interaction, a person who is very clearly the Defendant refused to provide his name or identification and indicated that he does not have insurance,’ the order alleges.
A video of the apparent incident shows Morphew offering the driver whose car he hit $300 in cash for damages, which she refused.
‘He didn’t tell me his name, didn’t give any insurance at all,’ the driver told CBS News. ‘He was just trying to give me $300 cash.’
When the driver said she was calling the police, Morphew fled the scene, nearly hitting another person and driving over a curb.
Alamosa County District Judge Amanda Hopkins has set a hearing for Tuesday to discuss whether Morphew should remain out on bond, according to online records.

Morphew emerged as the prime suspect in his wife’s murder after Suzanne disappeared in 2020, when she set out on a bike ride from their home.
A search of the Morphew home found a live .22 caliber bullet by Suzanne’s bed, and a needle cap from a tranquilizer dart was found in the dryer, tangled up among washed bed sheets.
Investigators also recovered empty tranquilizer darts, a needle used to inject tranquilizer chemicals into the darts and a dart gun.
In a stunning development, Morphew was arrested and charged with his wife’s murder in May 2021, but the case would collapse before making it to trial, with prosecutors deciding to withdraw the charges until Suzanne’s body was found in 2023.
Morphew was arrested for a second time in 2025 and charged again with first-degree murder.
Despite the charges against Morphew, his daughters, Mallory and Macy, have stood firmly by their father, insisting they do not believe he is a killer.
