Burnsville 78-year-old woman stabbed to death linked to Hopkins, Minnesota slaying of family of 3 at Brown Bear Childcare. Nathan Brown’s mother, Alice is identified as 78-year-old victim. Slaying follows Kristen Brown and the couple’s daughter found stabbed to death at daycare with husband and father dead from self inflicted gunshot. 

A 78-year-old woman found stabbed to death some 20 miles from where three people were found dead in a suspected murder-suicide at a Hopkins, Minnesota daycare are believed to be linked.

Nathan Brown, 41, is alleged to have fatally stabbed his wife, Kristen Brown, 41, along with the couple’s 7-year-old daughter, previously reported as being 5-years old. The husband and father was discovered deceased the result of a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities described the family’s death as a murder-suicide.

78-year-old Burnsville, Minnesota woman found stabbed to death linked to Hopkins, MN murder-suicide

A deceased 78-year-old woman, the victim of multiple stab wounds was reportedly found at a Burnsville, Minnesota home some 20 miles away, KARE11 reported.

While authorities declined to identify the woman, social media identified the 78-year-old woman being Nathan Brown’s mother, Alice Brown.

The purported slaying of Nathan and Kristen Brown took place at their family run daycare center, Brown Bear Childcare.

The domestic violence is alleged to have been witnessed by six young children at the daycare along with a parent who had come to drop off their child. Previous reports told of the violence occurring just before 9 a.m at Tyler Avenue North, in Hopkins, Minnesota, Wednesday morning.

A 78-year-old woman was later found murdered at a second scene in nearby Burnsville shortly before 12:30 p.m. local time. Police have stated that they believe the cases to be linked, describing the woman as ‘a close family relative of the suspect,’ ABC6 reported.

The Brown Bear daycare according to its Facebook page was described as a licensed home center ‘to help children learn grow.’

The center was run out of a four–bedroom, two–bathroom home that featured ‘1800 square feet of dedicated play space.’

Records show the daycare has been licensed by the state since 2019 and has a capacity of 10 children. It was found to be in compliance during visits in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

A regard of Alice Brown’s Linkdelin profile described the 78-year-old fatal victim as, ‘Retired Life Enrichment Coordinator at Carefree Living.’ 

Stated the about page: ‘Created life enrichment activities for 14 years as the activity coordinator at Carefree Living involving volunteers and community groups bringing events such as luncheon outings, trips to museums, Como Conservatory, Heart of the City art shows, movies and Dakota County Quilts Shows. Special events were coordinated involving Burnsville Lions in the Antique Car Show, local churches for multi-faith Easter service, animal visits, visiting artists and entertainers, in-house county fair and art displays.’

Not immediately known is whether the retired community organizer was involved in the running and management of Brown Bear Childcare which her son, Nathan and wife, Kristen Brown ran.

Community grapples for answers

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said she is aware of the ‘tragic and devastating incident’ and is working with Hopkins police during the investigation.

‘Our office’s victim services division is prepared to support the individuals impacted by this incident,’ she wrote on X. ‘We will provide further updates when available.’

Police did not immediately provide information about a possible motive or describe the circumstances leading up to the killings.The investigation remains ongoing, said police.
