Briella Holmes, 3-year-old Florida girl dies after getting head stuck in play toy kitchen at Boynton Beach babysitter’s home trying to retrieve items. Death ruled accidental and the result of asphyxia. No charges.
A 3-year-old Florida girl has died after her head became trapped inside a toy play kitchen while trying to retrieve some items at her babysitter’s home.
The tragic incident happened on July 23 at a home in the Meadows of Boynton Beach community in Palm Beach County, where Briella Holmes and her sibling were being cared for by a babysitter.
A child’s innocence leads to tragedy
According to a press release from the Boynton Beach Police Department, the babysitter left the home for a period of time, leaving their spouse to supervise the children. Cops said the spouse remained upstairs but periodically checked on the children as they played downstairs and brought them snacks.
During one check, the spouse discovered Briella with her head stuck inside a toy kitchen play set. They were able to free the toddler and immediately began lifesaving measures until first responders arrived.
Police said Briella’s sibling told investigators that some of her toys had fallen into the play kitchen, and she became trapped while trying to retrieve them.
Emergency crews responded to the home after receiving a report of a child who was unresponsive and not breathing. Briella was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where she died four days later.
Toy kitchen tragedy raises questions
The youngster’s death was ruled accidental by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner. She died of ‘probable positional asphyxia,’ the coroner told The Daily Mail.
The tragedy has since raised alarm amongst parents with many wondering how the toddler’s death could’ve been avoided and whether the toy set itself was at fault?
Preliminary reports did not indicate that the kitchen set involved had been previously recalled.
