The parents of a Michigan family found dead in a Grand Haven Township home following a house fire on Friday have been identified.
Amanda ‘Mandy’ Karolkiewicz, 39, and Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, were identified as the mother and father of the six children found deceased. The couple’s six children, Keegan, Bennett, Caroline, Ella, Smith, and Teddy Karolkiewicz, according to a family member ranged from ages 5 to 15.

‘My little sister Mandy, her husband, and my six nieces and nephews,’ her sister Molly Cessna wrote on Facebook alongside an article about the deaths.
‘Everything’s just blurry. Please continue to pray, friends. please continue to pray as we try and piece everything together. Our hearts are utterly shattered. Tragic doesn’t even touch it.’
The family of eight was found dead in their home on Riverside Trail near 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive Friday afternoon after fire officials responded to reports of smoke in the area, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said.
Firefighters were initially sent to the area around 8:30 a.m. Friday after calls about the smell of smoke, the sheriff’s office said. They could not find a fire and left, WOOD-TV reported.
Hours later, just after 11:40 a.m., Ottawa County Dispatch received more calls about smoke coming from the home on Riverside Trail. Dispatch traffic recordings outline a report of a house ‘full of smoke’ with white smoke coming from a window.
Fire crews took an ‘offensive’ tactic, trying to knock down the fire, clear the smoke and check the house for occupants.
It’s there that respondents found ‘multiple’ people dead.
Murder-suicide investigated
During a press conference Friday evening, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks revealed that some of the victims had had gunshot wounds, with authorities now investigating the deaths the result of a possible murder-suicide.
‘Some of the victims … inside the residence did have gunshot wounds to their bodies. We don’t have cause of death at this point,’ Sparks said. ‘I don’t know if there were other means that were used.’
Sparks said investigators are still awaiting autopsy results from the medical examiner to determine the official cause and manner of death for each victim.
Sparks said investigators surmised that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
News of the tragedy led to Grand Haven Area Public Schools announcing its intent to offer support to grieving community members.
‘It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge reports of a devastating incident in Grand Haven Township earlier today involving the loss of multiple lives, including several school-aged children,’ the district said in a statement posted to social media. ‘Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating incident and a tragic loss for our community.’
The district did not state whether the children who died were students at the district or whether the family had any other connections to the local schools.
What went wrong?
Karolkiewicz was a beloved substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools.
In January, the district shared a glowing review of the educator, boasting that she ‘goes above and beyond’ for students at Peach Plains Elementary School on Facebook.
Karolkiewicz and her husband had been together for roughly 16 years, according to Kristopher’s social media.
‘Going on 10 years with this pretty lady. I’m a very lucky guy,’ he captioned a photo on Facebook with his wife in 2019.
News of the deaths sent shockwaves through the small community near the Millhouse Bayou off the Grand River, including among the many residents who said they knew the children who lived in the house.
Neighbor Scott Fischer told WOOD-TV that the children killed were very active in the neighborhood.
‘Shocked, sad … if you heard noise in this neighborhood, it largely came from those kids running around playing with other kids, and to see something like this and to come home to this, literally our hearts dropped,’ Fischer told the outlet.
A memorial was held by neighbors and community members outside of the home Saturday.
