A man allegedly gunned down his ex-wife and her husband inside a Las Vegas, Nevada, grocery store as shoppers scrambled to find cover before bystanders tackled and subdued him.
Alejandro Alfonso Estrada, 43, is accused of opening fire Tuesday morning inside a Smith’s grocery store on South Maryland Parkway, killing his ex-wife Amanda Frias Rosas and her husband Victor Frias Rosas, according to KTNV.
Estrada, who shares two children with his former wife, was taken into custody after shoppers wrestled him to the ground.
Former couple embroiled with child custody and child support issues
Police said Estrada and the female victim had been dealing with custody issues, according to KTNV.
Estrada and Amanda Frias Rosas shared a son who turned 12 on the day of the shooting. The former couple also shared a daughter whose birthday was days away, and that a child support hearing had been scheduled for June 1.
Estrada had previously been ordered to pay $342 per month in child support and allegedly owed more than $2,800 as of November, according to court filings.
Hanna Manker, who was shopping inside the store with her two young children when gunfire erupted, told KTNV she heard ‘about five or six shots’ before customers began running.
‘My kids and I went to get some groceries,’ Manker told the outlet. ‘Everybody started running. I didn’t know what to do so I ducked down with my kids.’

After the gunfire erupted, several bystanders intervened and physically tackled Estrada inside the store. At least three shoppers held him down until officers arrived. Police said Estrada was later taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being booked into custody.
Police praised the shoppers who intervened, with Homicide Lt. Robert Price saying they ‘showed tremendous courage.’
Following his arrest, Estrada was booked on two counts of open murder, seven counts of discharging a gun within a prohibited area, one count of burglary while possessing a firearm and one count of aggravated stalking.
A GoFundMe created for Amanda Rosas’ family described her as a ‘young mother’ whose children now face an ‘unimaginable loss.’ The fundraiser notes donations would help cover funeral expenses and provide support for the children.
Kroger, which owns Smith’s grocery stores, stated in a release that the company was ‘deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence.’ The store remained closed Wednesday, May 13, as the investigation continued.
