A well known South Bend, Indiana yoga instructor was shot dead and his girlfriend seriously injured in a targeted attack after the suspected gunman, a former police officer barging into their home before fleeing the scene and taking his own life at his nearby home, after setting the structure on fire.
Adonis Latroy Joseph, 41, of Elkhart was found dead in a home in the Golden Pond Trail subdivision with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Prior to his shooting death, he had set his home on fire, leading to 911 calls.
Joseph a former police officer with the South Bend police force was found at the burning home hours after the double shooting at the Highlands Apartment that killed Kaylon Rashaad Woods, 38, and seriously injured Madi Morin, 30.
Internal investigations into ex South Bend police officer shooter suspect
Investigators allege Joseph fatally shooting 38-year-old Kaylon Woods and wounding his girlfriend at an apartment in the 2500 block of Links Drive on Monday afternoon. The couple were dating and Joseph was Morin’s former partner and the father of her two girls, WNDU-TV reported.
After the double shooting Monday, a SWAT team was called to the 28000 block of Golden Pond Trail in Elkhart to find the suspect. As SWAT teams converged on the area, a fire broke out at the home, triggering a major emergency response that included law enforcement and fire crews, along with additional tactical support as a precaution.
According to a release from the Elkhart Police Department, once the fire was extinguished, Joseph was found with a gunshot wound to the head.
Adonis Joseph started working for the South Bend Police Department in May 2011 only for his tenure to end six years later following claims of impropriety against the then cop.
In 2017, Internal Affairs opened an investigation regarding allegations involving Joseph. He was relieved of duty, and he resigned just a month later, in January, 2018, WSBT reported.
Fatal victim was beloved South Bend yoga instructor
Kaylon Woods was a well-known yoga instructor at DRIP Infrared Sauna Studio in South Bend. According to those who knew him, he would walk into a room and make it feel better.
‘We are heartbroken by the loss of someone who meant so much to our community. He was not only a talented yoga instructor at DRIP this past winter, but a steady, positive presence who brought people together,’ said Jayme Barcus, owner of DRIP. ‘Our hearts are with his kids, his family and everyone who knew and loved him. Right now, we are focused on supporting one another and honoring his life in a way that reflects the impact he had on all of us.’
A GoFundme fundraiser has since been started to assist Madi Morin and her two girls.
