A 10-year-old Alabama girl found slain at a residence over the weekend was stabbed to death by a juvenile who now faces murder charges.
Katheryn Bigbee, an elementary school student from Piedmont, Ala., was found dead in her home on April 17, police said, AL.com reported.

‘The parents heard something, and they couldn’t find one of the children inside the home,’ Piedmont police Chief Nathan Johnson told the outlet. ‘And so they went outside to look. And that’s how it came in as a missing person. They ended up finding a female with extensive injuries, appeared to be deceased.’
The Calhoun County Coroner ruled that Katheryn had been stabbed to death.
Unanswered questions
Authorities declined to identify the juvenile given the age of the alleged suspect nor say what led to the fatal stabbing or how the victim came to know the juvenile suspect.
Piedmont Elementary School where Katheryn attended paid tribute to her in a Facebook post.
‘Our entire Piedmont Elementary School family is grieving as we remember a sweet little girl who brought smiles, kindness, and a bright light to our halls each day,’ the school said. ‘Katheryn had a joyful, spunky personality that made her truly special. She was an enthusiastic reader and will be remembered for the happiness she shared so freely.’
A GoFundMe launched to raise money for the girl’s family has raised more than $16,000.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
