Social media has identified the three individuals killed in a Detroit crash in the Little Caesars area early Monday morning as Wayne State University students.

Family and friends and online fundraisers identified the victims as Kumkum Elangovan, 19, Rebecca Jose, 20, and Amaan Malik, 22.

All three individuals died at the scene after the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a parked semi truck near campus just on 1.30 a.m, Monday, March 16th.

Wayne State University release statement

A fourth person, who was also a Wayne State University student, was seriously injured in the crash, university officials said. That individual was expected to survive the crash.

Responding to the tragedy, Wayne State University (WSU) school officials released a statement.

‘We grieve with the families, friends, faculty and classmates of those who were lost, and we send our strength to the injured student and their loved ones. The Dean of Students Office is contacting the students’ families to determine their wishes moving forward,’ WSU President Richard Bierschbach said in a note to students. ‘Out of respect for the families, we are not sharing additional details at this time. We are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals caring for those affected.’

Cause of crash involving 4 WSU students yet to be determined

The crash happened in the area of Temple Street and Cass Avenue, near the Little Caesars Arena, Detroit News reported.

Police said the driver smashed into a parked parked semi truck in the area. The cause and manner of the crash continues to remain under investigation.

GoFundMe fundraisers identified Elangovan and Jose, while Malik’s death was confirmed by family friends on social media. As of Wednesday, the fundraisers had amassed substantial donations to aid the families with funeral and other expenses.

University officials added that counseling and psychological services were available on campus. They asked anyone in crisis to call the Warrior Mental Health Urgent Services at (313) 577-2277.

Michigan State Police said last Tuesday that 11 people died on Michigan roadways over the previous week, raising the total number of traffic deaths to 127 so far this year.
