The mayhem unfolded, Thursday as the suspect drove a truck carrying explosives into the Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township synagogue with an attached preschool. The vehicle caught fire after ‘something ignited’ moments after the suspect driver smashing into the synagogue the nytimes reported.
The suspect was found dead inside the vehicle, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters. The exact means of the driver’s death had yet to be determined.
‘We can’t say what killed him at this point,’ Bouchard said, ‘but security did engage the suspect with gunfire.’
A search of the driver’s vehicle led to the discovery of a ‘large amount of explosives’.

Bouchard said the suspect drove through doors of the building and down the hall. The sheriff described watching a video that showed the attacker ‘traveling with purpose’ through the hallway.
Bouchard said everyone inside the building has been accounted for and there are no other injuries beyond the injured security guard.
Investigators are still working to identify the shooter and a possible motive for the attack, a source told the Associated Press. The investigation is still in the early stages.
Officials didn’t say whether the attack was connected to the U.S. and Israel-led attack on Iran, which has since led to heightened concern about retaliation.
In a post on X, FBI director, Kash Patel, said federal agents were on the scene ‘responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation.’
The Michigan State Police said on social media that it’s ‘increasing patrols at other places of worship in the area.’
The synagogue is a reform Jewish place of worship that has a preschool attached to it. It has one of the largest congregations in the country and was open at the time.
This synagogue, like nearly all Jewish places of worship in the U.S., has its own security officers amid heightened incidents of antisemitism and the ongoing strife involving Gaza and the Mid-East.
