‘A nightmare inside a nightmare…’ A Michigan father sustained critical burns in a desperate bid to save his two young sons lives after a house fire breaking out over the weekend.
The blaze which broke out at the family’s home in Jackson just on 7:53 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, led to the two boys dying, their father, Davin Videto, 27, now fighting for his life in hospital along with the boy’s mother, Jasmin Videto, 23, inconsolable as she admits, ‘not knowing how she will move forward.’
Jackson, Michigan toddler brothers die in house fire
Speaking to MLive, Jasmin told the outlet on the morning of the fire, the couple waking up to the sounds of their two children, Dillon, aged 1, and his sibling, Atticus, aged, 3-years-old screaming from their bedroom as a fire alarm sounded off.
As she sought to grab the boys, Jasmin said she saw flames shooting from the children’s bedroom door. That’s when Davin pushed her aside and ran into the room, shutting the door behind him in an effort to save their children. Despite a valiant effort the father was unable to prevail, with the boys succumbing to the flames and their father sustaining critical injuries.
Unable to reach the boys in time, the dad managed to drag himself out of the home and into the snow-covered yard.
‘I don’t know who I am without my kids, without taking care of my kids, without taking care of my husband and my family,’ Jasmin told MLive. ‘I can’t wrap my mind around it still. It feels like a nightmare inside of a nightmare.’
Untenable conditions inside as cause of fire remains unknown
When first responders arrived, they encountered heavy fire on the first floor and were told that children were still inside the home.
Davin was found in the front yard suffering from ‘significant burn injuries,’ officials said. As he was treated by ambulance crews, firefighters entered the burning structure.
‘Despite extreme fire conditions, firefighters were able to quickly locate and remove the victims from the structure,’ the fire department said in a statement. However, the conditions inside were described as ‘untenable,’ and Atticus and Dillon were pronounced dead at the scene.
A second search of the home led to the discovery of the family’s two dogs, who also died in the fire.
Dad yet to be told his two sons didn’t make it
Sgt. Greg Nichols of the Michigan State Police confirmed to MLive that the cause of the fire remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious. Authorities said working smoke alarms were present when the fire broke out on the northwest side of the building near the children’s bedroom.
Davin, who remains in critical condition, has not yet been told that his children died.
The father underwent surgery on Thursday in hopes of grafting part of the right side of his body where the dad sustained severe burns. The father is expected to have a series of grafting surgeries in the weeks ahead.
Atticus would have turned 4 in March and Dillon would have been 2 in May.
