A daycare teacher in Illinois is facing charges for allegedly giving several toddlers laxatives after telling the children that the items were candy.
Yizel J. Juarez, 23, of Sycamore, following her arrest was charged with three counts each of attempted aggravated battery causing bodily harm to a victim under the age of 13 and three counts of endangering the life or health of a child, both of which are misdemeanors.
Multiple complaints by parents led to school investigation and daycare worker found out
The St. Charles Police Department in a Facebook release stated that on Tuesday at about 9:45 a.m., they were contacted ‘by multiple parents’ that their children attending The Learning Experience day care in St. Charles had ‘been given a chewable laxative by one of their day care teachers.’
Investigating officers, confirmed the alleged incident had occurred. Each child was 2 years old or younger, police said.
Juarez was identified as the suspect, and after police consulted with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, charges were brought against the educator. Juarez turned herself in and was released from custody.
Laxatives leave children with long lasting effects
Daycare worker who was recent hire is believed to have been administering the laxatives since coming on board in August of last year.
Another parent said her child had been suffering from diarrhea for two months, and doctor visits and switching the toddler’s formula had yet to resolve the problem.
‘We thought it could have been a virus, and that was negative,’ the mother told WBBM. ‘We found out from the director that she had fired her employee because she allegedly was giving them these laxatives and saying that it was candy so that they could get sent home because she was overwhelmed.’
‘It’s disgusting. Get another job then,’ the mother added.
Juarez has since been fired from her daycare employer and has a scheduled court date.
