Surveillance footage has captured the moment a teen suspected of shoplifting at a Walmart store in Canton, Ohio pulling out a gun and firing at a police officer while being questioned only for the ‘malfunctioning’ gun failing to fire.

Leading up to the potentially deadly episode, Walmart’s security called Canton, Ohio police as the suspected shoplifter duo tried to leave the premises with the items that they allegedly hadn’t paid for.

Saved by malfunctioning gun

When the responding cop arrived, Shane Newman, 21 and Katerina Jeffrey, 23 were taken to the store’s loss prevention office where they were interrogated.

In the body camera video, an officer asks at least three times if Newman has anything on him that the police should know about.

Newman replies he has only his phone, which gives police officers a fake name.

Newman then voluntarily handed over a container of illegal drugs, Fox 8 reported.

It’s at this point that Jeffrey asked if they were going to go to jail.

‘Not unless something crazy happens,’ the officer replied.

After a few tense moments passing,  Newman is seen suddenly pulling out a gun out of his backpack and attempting to shoot the officer, only for the weapon to fail to fire.

A Walmart employee gets Newman to drop his weapon, and the police officer wrestles the suspect to the ground. Jeffrey, his companion, can be heard telling him to stop.
