Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot while responding to a car crash in Kendall County after an altercation ensued in which he was trying to subdue a man.

Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, ‘was brutally attacked, and he was murdered,’ Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said during a Friday evening news conference.

‘He’s not only a deputy, he’s a son, he’s a brother, and he is a friend,’ Cordero-Stutz said. ‘What happened to our deputy is not okay. He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending us, defending you. And we need to understand as a society and as a community that that is just unacceptable.’

Miami-Dade Deputy responded to crash involving domestic violence subject

Jaramillo was shot shortly before 4 p.m. after being dispatched to the scene of a vehicle crash in the area of the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street. Soon after the officer was shot by one of the individuals involved in the crash following an ‘altercation.’

Bystanders called 911, deputies responded and gave him first aid before the fallen cop was rushed to a local hospital, where Devin Jaramillo died from his injuries, the sheriff said.

Leading up to the shooting, Deputy Jaramillo had been dispatched to the scene of a crash when one of the parties involved in the crash attacked the officer. After firing at Jaramillo, the assailant returned to a green Mustang vehicle and shot himself to death, NBC6 reported citing a source at the scene.

WPLG cited a source at the scene saying Jaramillo’s attacker had been the subject of a domestic violence call that Jaramillo had responded to in the Kendall District.

There was a second person at the crash scene who was being questioned, with police saying he was not considered a suspect, and not the subject of an investigation.

The sheriff’s office was now investigating whether the deputy was shot with his own gun during the altercation. It remained unclear what led up to the altercation and why the gunman may have reached for the deputy’s gun.

The unfolding scene led to a swath of police presence including Coral Gables Police, Florida Highway Patrol troopers along with FBI agents. Video posted by Only in Dade showed law enforcement responding to the scene earlier, some in defensive positions with weapons drawn.

Miami Dade deputy honored and killed during the line of duty

Authorities had the area around the scene blocked off and a number of nearby roadways were closed.

A large number of officers had gathered at HCA-Florida Kendall Hospital, where Jaramillo was taken. By nighttime, even more officers had gathered for a procession to honor the fallen officer.

Jaramillo earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and corrections from the University of Central Florida and interned with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Jaramillo served as a police officer with the Coral Gables Police Department for nearly four years. After solving several theft cases, he received the police officer of the month award in July 2023.

Jaramillo had followed in the footsteps of his father, David Jaramillo, a retired Miami-Dade Police detective who served as the president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association.
