Sophia Rosing motion for early release and probation denied after Judge states freeing the former University of Kentucky student from her 1 year jail sentence early would only serve to undermine the seriousness of her crime and actions.

A former University of Kentucky student who went on a racist tirade, physically assaulting and calling a black student the n-word more than 200 times has had her motion for an early release and probation denied.

Sophia Rosing, 24, who was sentenced to one-year jail last year following the racist assault and tirade was denied early release, despite lawyers for the woman claiming the case had been blown out of proportion according to the Courier-Journal.

Rosing’s lawyer filed a ‘shock probation’ request in February, in which Rosings legal team asked that Rosing serve out the balance of her remaining sentence on probation. Rosing who began serving a one year sentence in October had only served 4 months of her 12 month sentence when she made her request for early release.

Former racist University of Kentucky student hadn’t anticipated her actions would have consequences

The lawyer’s request claimed his ‘troubled client’ had changed her ways and ‘dedicated herself to personal growth and accountability’ while also suffering from ‘tremendous personal and professional consequences’ for her behavior, the motion stated.

The motion also stated lawyers for Rosing saying the former student did not pose a threat to public safety and was focused on bettering herself.

Fayette Circuit Court Judge Lucy VanMeter hearing the motion for early release and probation, declined the motion, saying it would ‘unduly depreciate the seriousness’ of the crime, according to the court filing reviewed by WKYT.

Reported the Lexington Herald Leader: ‘Rosing asked for probation after being in jail since October 2024. The filing states that Rosing’s ”actions led to consequences she never anticipated.”

Noted an online letter as written by Rebecca Cornelius, a professor emerita at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, pleading to uphold the sentence, ‘We are seeing more and more unfettered hateful, racist behavior throughout our country. It is a dangerous precedent to permit such actions without people being held accountable and facing the consequences.’

Unfettered racism throughout society

Rosing got herself in strife and on the front pages of tabloids the world over when on Nov. 6 2022, she confronted Kylah Spring, a 19-year-old black student worker at the Lexington college campus who was serving as a front-desk clerk the night Rosing drunkenly stumbled back into her dorm without her student ID.

‘You’re a n—-r and you’re a bitch,’ a belligerent Rosing shouts in captured surveillance video, when she is unable to pull out her student ID, in which she proceeds to scream at Spring to ‘do my chores’, yelling, ‘it’s not my fault that you’re black,’ along with using the n-word more than 200 times.

Rosing then went off on cops when they showed up, kicking and biting them before being hauled away.

Rosing a one time business and marketing major pleaded guilty to four counts of first degree assault charges, one count of disorderly conduct and one count of alcohol intoxication in October in exchange for a 12-month sentence and 100 hours of community service, along with a $25 fine.

Rosing, who was permanently banned from the university, has been kept separate from other inmates at the jail for fear of retaliation over her racist tirade, according to reports.
