Tuskegee University shooting leads to 1 dead, several injured during 100th homecoming anniversary at historically black college in Alabama. No arrests.

One person was killed and several others injured in a shooting in the early hours of Sunday during a homecoming event at Tuskegee University in Alabama, the school said.

Gunfire erupted on Tuskegee University’s campus as the streets were filled with students, alumni and community members celebrating the ‘historically black’ school’s 100th homecoming.

The shooting resulted in ‘the death of a non-university individual,‘ the university said in a statement released early Sunday.

Extent of injuries unknown

‘The parents of this individual have been notified,’ the statement read. ‘Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.’

‘Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, have secured the scene,’ the university added. ‘The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation.’

‘The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.’

Saturday was the last day of homecoming, and the campus had large crowds celebrating late into the night and early the next morning.

Videos shared on social media show rapid-fire shots ringing out as terrified attendees ducking and hiding crouched on the ground behind cars.

What sparked Alabama homecoming shooting?

Police responded to a shots fired call at 1200 West Montgomery Road, West Commons, one of the school’s apartment complexes.

University officials didn’t reveal precisely how many people were wounded in the shooting, nor did they reveal the extent of their injuries.

Among those injured was a female student who was shot in the stomach and a male student who was shot in the arm, Tuskeegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis said.

‘Some idiots started shooting,’ Mardis told AL.com. ‘You couldn’t get the emergency vehicles in there, there were so many people there.’

It was not immediately known how many shooters there were or what led up to the shooting. No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.

Tuskegee University is located about 39 miles east of Montgomery, Alabama.
