Graduating daughter failed to turn up to airport, raising questions

Alongside the slain woman was her former boyfriend, 22 year old man, Chase Cooper. The former love interest is believed to have shot dead his victim then self.

‘Initial information leads investigators to believe this was a murder-suicide conducted by Chase Cooper,’ police said in a released statement.

Newton was found by her family members who had flown in for her graduation on Tuesday, police said.

‘Monet’s family expected her to pick them up from the airport, but when Monet did not show up, her family became concerned,’ police said in their statement. ‘Monet’s family and friends were unable to contact her and therefore went to her apartment.’

Once there, they found her body.

The graduate student, who had gotten her masters in psychology at Grand Canyon University, was supposed to attend her graduation from the school on Thursday.

Monet had been working with the Phoenix Suns while going to school.

‘This family was getting ready to celebrate something so special, something that she worked so hard for and the celebration turned to tragedy immediately,’ Jose Santiago of the Glendale police said according to 12 News

Family said there were no known red flags

Police say Newton and Cooper were in a brief romantic relationship that had ended recently. The former couple had only dated briefly for a few months.

Monet Newton grew up with her family in Santa Clarita, California. She was very close to her sister Myah Newton, who is devastated by the death of Monet, AZFamily reported.

Myah described Monet as a strong, intelligent, compassionate woman who had her whole life ahead of her.

‘Everything about her life is just, it was earned. My sister was such a hard worker from time we were little girls. She’s always been hardest worker of the bunch,’ sister, Myah told the outlet. ‘She worked hard for what she had and I think it’s so terrible this person took it from her when we were supposed to be celebrating her. Now I have to watch my parents go through this. It’s just so sad.’

Asked if there had been any ‘red flags’ with her former boyfriend, her sister said no.

According to her Linkedin profile, Newton previously graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and business management from the Grand Canyon University. For her master’s degree, she had studied industrial psychology at the same university.

An investigation is ongoing.
