Define irony? A former police sergeant in San Francisco is alleged to have shot and killed his police officer wife, their daughter before turning the murder weapon on himself at the family’s Bay Area home in California.

Kevin Mannix, 68, was found dead on Sunday evening in his family’s $2 million home in the Strawberry neighborhood of Mill Valley, CA.

Mannix, a retired San Francisco sergeant, shot and killed his estranged wife, former SFPD Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and their youngest daughter, Katie, 25, before killing himself, sources told the San Francisco Chronicle.

No known motive

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire coming from inside the house just after 5pm on Sunday and a call from someone who was in that home when the shots were fired.

‘Within minutes, deputies arrived on scene and made contact with the reporting party, who safely exited the residence. After securing a perimeter, deputies entered the home,’ the sheriff’s office said.

Inside, deputies discovered three deceased individuals, identified as Kevin, Ann and Katie, and determined there was no ongoing threat. Along with 25-year-old Kate, the police officer husband and wife had two other children, Lauren and Kevin.

‘The preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals. The suspected shooter is male,’ the sheriff’s office said.

Officials to date have not commented on what they believe led to the double murder-suicide.

Former top female cop was trailblazer

San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew shared a message with the department announcing their deaths on Sunday, KGO reported.

‘It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Ann and Kevin Mannix,’ Lew wrote.

‘Please keep their family in your prayers. BSU is available to all members who may need it during this difficult time.’

The San Francisco Police Officers Association issued a statement on Monday saying the ‘suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family reeling.’

‘Ann Mannix was a trailblazer in our department – becoming the first woman to join and lead the SWAT team, and rising to lead both the Field Operations and Special Operations Bureaus,’ the association posted on Facebook.

‘Many worked alongside Kevin during his 27 years of dedicated service at Taraval Station and beyond.

‘To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired.’

San Francisco sergeant farewell letter

Kevin retired from the SFPD in June 2018 after 27 years of service.

‘I am looking forward to a new life of leisure with family and friends. But I am a little saddened by the thought of not seeing all of you every day or at community events,’ he wrote in a farewell letter to the Taraval Police Station at the time.

‘I will miss you all. Believe me, that is not a trite generalization… I leave the SFPD, but I am taking your friendships with me forever.’

Ann climbed the ranks of the San Francisco Police Department, becoming deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau in 2018 before taking charge of the Special Operations Bureau in 2019, according to department records.

She also made history as the first woman to serve on the department’s SWAT team and eventually lead the unit.

Records show Ann served as deputy chief of the SFPD Field Operations Bureau in 2018, then led the Special Operations Bureau in 2019.
