Margaret Rog, Morgantown, West Virginia woman accused of leaving 76-year-old husband, with multiple medical conditions, including blindness, dementia, Alzheimer’s on toilet seat for 19 hours, resulting in his death as the wife even admitted watching the man groan in pain only to later go to bed that day before a speech therapist finding the victim ‘unresponsive’ the next morning.
A West Virginia woman is accused of leaving her 76-year-old husband on the toilet for 19 hours, leading to significant injuries and the man’s cause of death, according to authorities.
Margaret Rog, 75, of Morgantown, following her arrest on Tuesday was charged with abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.
On Aug. 20, the victim, who had been diagnosed with dementia, Alzheimer’s, legal blindness and multiple other physical and medical conditions, went to the bathroom at around 3 p.m. When Rog was unable to get him up, she left him unattended on the toilet without food, water or prescribed medications. The spouse rather than calling for help, 911 or assistance instead chose to leave the man on the toilet seat as she later that evening went to sleep.
Vulnerable man only discovered the next morning when speech therapist arrived at couple’s Morgantown home
It wasn’t until the next morning that the victim was found just on 10 a.m, after a speech therapist arrived for an in-home visit. The spouse was found unresponsive and in dangerously poor condition according to court documents cited by WDTV.
Deputies said Rog watched her husband groaning in pain, never called anyone for help and went to bed, leaving him unattended and unresponsive in the bathroom.
When Rog’s husband arrived at the hospital, he was diagnosed with heart failure, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, wounds on his backside, shortness of breath, altered mental status, hypernatremia, sepsis and rhabdomyolysis, according to court documents.
Rog’s husband died on Aug. 31 at the hospital.
Morgantown wife admits leaving victim to suffer and choosing not to assist
Deputies said his condition and injuries sustained from being left on the toilet were determined to have been ‘significant contributing factors’ to his death.
Court documents allege Rog made several statements to law enforcement, adult protection services and family members during the investigation, which incriminated herself and indicated she comprehended the victim’s need for assistance but deliberately decided against providing it.
Rog is currently in the North Central Regional Jail with bond set at $75,000.
Authorities have yet to say why the woman chose to let her husband suffer and leave the vulnerable man unattended and why she had deliberately decided against seeking assistance for the aged care victim.
Others meanwhile have wondered why the vulnerable man had not been placed in an aged care facility and what resources, if any, the state offered the medically riddled man.
