A 39-year-old Texas man has been charged with the shooting death of his wife, a Fort Worth ISD assistant principal, after she was ‘accidentally’ shot in the face at the family home.

Lindsay Velasquez, 42, who worked at Luella Merret Elementary, was found unresponsive following a 911 call on Friday, April 17, 7:26 p.m. on the 1000 block of Sproles Drive, the Benbrook Police Department said in a press release. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators on the scene arrested the victim’s husband, Alberto Velasquez and charged him with manslaughter, WFAA reported.

Social studies teacher claims accidentally shooting his assistant principal wife in the face

The husband — a social studies teacher in the same school district where his wife worked — claimed having shot the victim in the face by accident, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported, without detailing what led up to the shooting or exactly how it happened.

Lindsay Velasquez was in her second year as assistant principal at Luella Merrett Elementary School and was described as someone who supported both students and staff.

Friends of Lindsay Velasquez’s family created a GoFundMe to support her three daughters.

‘Lindsay had a rare and incredibly special way of making people feel truly seen and cared for,’ the GoFundMe stated. ‘The loss of Lindsay leaves a void that will be felt forever in the lives of those who loved her, especially her daughters, who now face a future without their mother’s presence, guidance, and unwavering love.’

If convicted, Alberto Velasquez faces a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine up to $10,000 in Texas.

He has since been released from jail on $35,000 bond.

Alberto Velasquez’s teaching certification remains active but is now under review by the Texas Education Agency. It appears he is on leave at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
