A 3-year-old girl was killed along with her heavily pregnant mother injured after a driver racing another vehicle plowed into the family’s car at a Tucson, Arizona intersection.
Christian Isaiah Randall, 22 was speeding in his Hyundai Genesis when he hit the family’s Silver Toyota Camry, killing the toddler and injuring her 9-month-pregnant mother, who was hospitalized, according to family members and police.
The incident which happened just on 1p.m, at East Valencia and South Country Club roads Friday afternoon left the family’s vehicle split in half, Tucson police said, KVOA reported.
Second speeding driver arrested
In the crash, the woman was turning left onto Country Club from westbound Valencia when her Toyota Camry was struck by a Hyundai Genesis, one of the two cars speeding east on Valencia, the Tucson Police Department said in the news release.
Police said the 3-year-old, Anna, was properly restrained in a car seat at the time of the crash. Both the toddler and her mother were taken to the hospital. The toddler died later, Tucson.com reported.
Police say Randall and another vehicle were speeding when they caused the crash. Investigators arrested the second driver, a 16-year-old on Sunday after fleeing the scene.
Randall who incurred minor injuries following the crash remains held on $500,000 bond on charges of second-degree murder, endangerment and aggravated assault, police said.
The second teen who was behind a Dodge Charger was booked on charges of second-degree murder and multiple counts of endangerment and aggravated assault. Police said he was booked into the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center.
Family demand accountability following road racing tragedy
The toddler’s pregnant mother is recovering in the hospital, with her unborn child surviving the collision. A memorial bearing Anna’s name has been placed at the intersection.
Excessive speeds by the Genesis and the other vehicle are the primary contributing factors of this collision, police determined. This investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released at a later date as it becomes available.
The tragedy led to Samantha Bracamonte, the sister in law of the driver of the Camry, posting on Facebook highlighting the dangers of road racing and demanding accountability.
Stated the post: ‘We lost our sweet 3 year old Anna to street racing. No family should ever have to feel this kind of pain.
A GoFundme fundraiser supporting Anna’s family at the time of loss as of Sunday had raised $73,245.
