Robert Deane Indianapolis man finds two babies dumped in a ditch outside his home after car they were in was stolen earlier that day. Car was found abandoned nearby without the missing girls as a frantic search for baby girls was underway.
An Indianapolis man is being hailed as a ‘Good Samaritan‘ after coming across two ‘missing babies’ dumped in a ditch in front of his home while going outside to see if a package he was expecting had arrived. Except something else arrived instead…
Robert Deane had just walked out of his home, Monday afternoon, December 2 when he spotted two baby car seats sitting in a ditch a few feet from his home. Dazzled by what he saw, Deane walked over and discovered two baby girls inside the car seats, who he would later find out had been in the back of a car stolen earlier that day.
Potential tragedy averted after Good Samaritan found baby girls
‘I’d do it again,’ Deane told USA Today. ‘If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something (and) do something.’
While it’s currently unknown how long the babies were outside, the weather was reportedly as low as 27 Fahrenheit degrees (32F is below freezing). Deane’s home was also around four miles away from the location of the theft, Indianapolis police told the outlet.
‘It’s cold out here,’ Indianapolis police spokesman William Young told USA Today. ‘Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside. It’s extremely cold, and we’re still in our early stages of trying to figure out who was responsible for this.’
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stated on X that they had been trying to locate a vehicle that had been stolen with a 4-month-old and 5-month-old baby inside (since revealed to be cousins).
‘The plate number on the vehicle is 364CMU. If you see this vehicle, please call 911 immediately,’ they added about the stolen car, which was taken from a home at East Gimber Street at around 11 a.m. that day, reported CBS4 Indy.
But where were the babies parents when car was stolen?
Police were alerted that two babies were inside the stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata before relocating the stolen vehicle only to find it empty. This happened around the same time Deane called authorities to state he’d found the two girls, CBS4 Indy reported.
‘Below are photos of the two baby girls who are in the vehicle. The vehicle is a silver 2013 Hyundai Sonata,’ Indianapolis police wrote on X as they shared two photos of the babies.
‘He did what any good person would do,’ Young added to USA Today about Deane. ‘He got those infants to shelter. This is an outcome that we wanted. I can’t thank that good Samaritan enough. We don’t have a suspect in custody, but that will be our next priority is figuring out who is responsible for this particular incident.’
Police are still searching for the person who stole the vehicle. A description of the suspect(s) was not provided. It remained unclear how the vehicle with the two babies came to be left alone and the whereabouts of the parent(s) at the time of the alleged car theft.
