Rhomesha Turner shot and killed participating in brother’s funeral procession 2 weeks after Chevelle Carter was also gunned down. Dixmoor, Illinois police to date have made no arrests in either of the siblings shooting murders.
A woman participating in her brother’s funeral procession in southern Chicago was shot and killed on Saturday.
Rhomesha Turner, 34, of Calumet Park, was following the procession in a white Jaguar along 147th and Seeley just after noon on Saturday when someone opened gunfire, striking the woman who then crashed her vehicle into a nearby house, Dixmoor police said.
The shooting occurred just moments after mourners had left a nearby church in Harvey, ABC7Chicago reported.
Dixmoor police found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds inside the white Jaguar.
Turner was taken by Bud’s Ambulance to the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where she died.
It remained unclear how the sister came to be shot and whether she’d been intentionally targeted. Turner was a sister and a mother—and to many, a well-known stylist.
The woman’s death led to the victim’s family saying they were now mourning the deaths of two family members within the space of two weeks, CBS News reported.
The funeral was for her brother, Chevelle Carter, who was shot and killed on Monday. Oct. 19, at 38th Street and Ellis Avenue in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. A witness told police two gunmen got into a white vehicle and fled the scene after the shooting at 8:40 p.m. that evening.
Police said to date no one has been arrested in the brother’s murder.
Police declined to announce a suspect in the shooting nor motive in the sister’s murder and whether the two killings were related.
Dixmoor police are investigating along with Illinois State Police. Late Saturday, police were still trying to figure out who fired the shots and how the chain of events happened.
