Lalita Kayi Kumar, US woman, 50, found chained to tree in India forest & left to die allegedly at the hands of her husband as emaciated woman claims having gone without food for 40 days.

A 50 year old ’emaciated’ American woman was found chained to a tree in a forest in India, telling rescuers she had been left ‘there to die’ by her husband without food for 40 days.

Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, was found chained in a dense forest in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra by a shepherd who came across the woman upon hearing her cries for help Saturday night, according to NDTV.

The frail appearing woman was taken to Goa Medical College for specialized therapy, where she was too weak to speak.

Extreme psychosis…

In a scribbled note, Kayi stated she had gone ’40 days without food in the forest’ after her ‘husband tied’ her to a tree with an iron chain following a ‘dispute.’

Authorities believe that the woman — who also wrote of suffering ‘extreme psychosis’ — suffers from mental health issues, NDTV said. Medications for such issues were found on her.

Police have since opened an investigation into possible attempted murder against her by her estranged husband. The man’s identity was not divulged.

‘Police are also trying to verify if the woman’s claim that she was chained by her former husband was genuine. We are verifying every claim and information in the note written by her,’ Police Superintendent Saurabh Agrawal told the outlet.

Kayi was found with an American passport — as well as an expired visa that suggested she had lived in India for 10 years. It was not clear where in America Kayi originally hailed from.

Other documents suggested she had been living with her husband in Tamil Nadu.

The woman was not able to provide authorities with an official statement due to her weakened state.

‘When we discovered her, she was seriously dehydrated. It appears that she was stuck there for a minimum of 48 hours. Although she was mute,’ said Amol Chavan, an inspector at Sawantwadi Police Station and member of the squad who located her told India TV.

Adding, ‘She is out of danger. Doctors treating her said she suffers from psychiatric problems. We have found medical prescriptions in her possession.’

Investigation launched

The police official said Kumar, who remained weak was ‘not in a position to give a statement’, and had been transferred to a hospital in the state of Goa for advanced treatment.

Police had to chop down the tree and break the lock holding the woman captive, according to Chavan.

Authorities are now trying to trace Kumar’s relatives in Goa. Investigators were also dispatched to the state of Tamil Nadu, where Kamur’s husband is believed to reside. ‘We are trying to find out whom she was in touch with in the past few months,’ Agrawal said.

Officials have yet to confirm just how long Kumar was left tied to the tree, but the area she was in had recently experienced a heavy bout of rain. A bout of rain that would have likely led to the frail woman’s death had she been caught in it in the open.

To date police have yet to say how the woman came to be chained and who they believed to have chained her and for how long she’d been in the forest prior to her discovery…
