How Dr Michelle Herren an assistant professor at the University of Colorado came to create havoc after Facebook comments she made were perceived racist.
The University of Colorado has indicated it now plans to fire Dr Michelle Herren after the school employee took to Facebook tending disparaging remarks about First Lady Michelle Obama, calling her ‘monkey face.’
The move to disassociate with the assistant professor comes after the school found itself being reproached by students concerned about what they perceived to be ‘racist remarks.’
Told University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine spokesperson, Mark Couch via the nydailynews: ‘We are beginning the process to terminate Dr. Michelle Herren’s faculty appointment,’
Adding: ‘We’ve had several students express concern through our office of diversity.’
The move to fire Michelle Herren comes after the academic responded to a woman’s comment praising the First Lady on Facebook.
Wrote Herren alongside a less than flattering photo of Obama: ‘Doesn’t seem to be speaking too eloquently here, thank god we can’t hear her!’
‘Harvard??? That’s a place for “entitled” folks said all the liberals!’
Adding: ‘Monkey face and poor ebonic English!!! There! I feel better and am still not racist!!! Just calling it like it is!’
Herren works at Denver Health Medical Center in the children’s unit as a pediatric anesthesiologist and holds a non-paid assistant professor position at the university.
In her defense Herren claimed comments made about incoming First Lady, Melania Trump are taken at face value while less than favorable comments made about Obama were immediately deemed racist.
That though didn’t stop what the university perceived to be inflammatory comments from the pediatrician being called out.
‘Your comments and tone are harmful to the students we teach and the patients we care for. Your derogatory, insensitive remarks have resulted in harm to others in our community and beyond,’ UC Dean of Medicine John J. Reilly said in a letter to Herren obtained by the Denver Post.
‘This poor Gorilla’ Jane Wood Allen teacher’s aide fired for racist Michelle Obama posting
In a separate statement, the school said Reilly sought to remind Herren that she was compelled ‘to conduct herself with civility’ as a faculty member.
Asked whether Denver Health also planned to cull Herren, the center responded it was ‘bumping up against a first amendment right,’ while noting it was ‘working very hard to resolve this situation.’
Nevertheless Denver Health spokesperson Kelli Christensen indicated via the nydailynews that the school administrator faced sanctions.
Told Christenson: ‘Until further notice, Michelle Herren, MD, will not be seeing patients or providing anesthesia services at Denver Health Medical Center.’
The University also told of Herren having been asked to tell students that she was getting fired.
A resignation that many would argue was only too forthcoming given the nature of Herren’s public role and the inflammatory nature of her belief system.
In the interim, Dr Michelle Herren has insisted she is not racist and that her comments were taken out of context. What do you think?
