Most daughters who would have their fathers meddling in their dating life might take offense, especially if they are a committed lesbian and already married to the love of their life. But that doesn’t necessarily describe Gigi Chao, the daughter of a Chinese billionaire, Cecil Chao Sze-tsung who posted a $65 million bounty for the man who could woo his daughter and marry her and of course produce offspring. Frankly she has found the whole experience quite charming. Well not necessarily very charming but as she would like to say at least ‘highly entertaining.’
telegraph.co.uk: “At first I was entertained by it, and then that entertainment turned into the realisation and conviction that I am a really lucky girl to have such a loving daddy, because it’s really sweet of him to do something like this as an expression of his fatherly love.”
And there you are sitting thinking to yourself you would tear daddy apart with a gold rimmed pitchfork and here’s Gigi Chao smiling effortlessly away blown away that her daddy would stoop so low simply because he is desperate to produce an heir and get her of course to stop being a lesbian which of course all things being equal must be somewhat inconvenient as the patriarch in dire need of an heir.
In fact when daddy’s offer first went live it sparked a minimum of 200 proposals (yes I was etching mine out in orange crayon cause as you might suspect I am the romantic kind and I very much wanted to make a rather good impression on Gigi, like you I imagine) as well as an avalanche of sudden twitter followers and Facebook friend requests.
Said Gigi at the time: “People are contacting me on Facebook, by email, on Twitter. It’s ridiculous. I can’t sort out the serious proposals from the half-hearted ones. I can’t make head or tail of it,”
Can’t make heads or tails of it? Gigi there are simply 65 million compelling reasons why you must make heads or tails of it.
But like all things in love some potential suitors went all guns in the hopes of getting Gigi to see the light of day, with some sending her nude photos of themselves (so that’s what I forgot to do, hmm) others financial reports of their affairs (yes someone better be able to pay for dinner I suppose) whilst others wrote Gigi as she termed them romantic poems ( I have written one in my head too, here are the first two lines: Gigi you are wanton milk and honey glistening with the taste of furious fast paced money).
Despite the initial surprise of her father’s offer Gigi Chao went on to reflect that ultimately she believes her father only did what he did because at the end of the day he sincerely loves her:
“It’s not that he can’t accept me. It’s that he can’t accept how society would view me and the status that it would incur. Marriage is still a form of social status. I do understand him. I understand why he’s doing this.”
Which begs the question, can daddy really ultimately come to terms with not necessarily what society may think about his daughter but how he really feels about her and whether he is willing to accept her despite her sexual orientation. After all if Gigi can accept her father having boasted having bedded as many as 1000 women in his lifetime surely he in return can accept her for bedding one or five here and there as well….?
And as an interesting aside the telegraph goes on to note that : “…although they have become more visible in recent years, members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in Hong Kong are still largely not accepted by the vast majority of the population.”
Let’s hope attitudes begin to change for the better in the not too distant future.
