Myron Mixon looks like an extra from “The Dukes of Hazard”. He’s from a tiny town of 500 residents in Georgia called Veinna. The title “winningest man in barbecue” is his. Judging from the brisket he served up at Big Apple BBQ, the title is well deserved. He can be seen on various food shows like Paula Dean and his book “Smokin” shares some of his secrets.

Finally barely able to move we arrived at Ed Mitchell‘s station. Mr Mitchell a pitmaster from Raleigh, North Carolina looks every bit the part in Bib overalls and a wide sweet smile. He confided in me that he is third generation in the business and introduced his two sons as heirs apparent. His whole hog BBQ and new healthy turkey Q were stellar. He credits author Calvin Trillin with introducing barbecue into the popular food culture.

The Big Apple Barbecue is a wonderful annual event with real people from around the country celebrating a diverse native American food culture that brings friends and families together. All hail to Danny Meyer, Kenny Callaghan and Mike Mills for bring world class BBQ and terrific roots music to the big apple every year.
