St. George’s is a charity and fellowship society that, today, supports elderly and disabled English residents in the New York area.  Evening Primrose will be the centerpiece of next Tuesday’s Anglo-American Cultural Awards, hosted by Jim Dale(!) and featuring a performance by Alan Cumming.

I was fortunate enough to sit in on rehearsals for next week’s event, and it was truly something. The show features men and women who have spent their entire careers onstage, and it shows.  They move with grace, poise and charm. They waltz as if clockwork. Those generous (and lucky) enough to attend are in for a real treat.

The collaboration of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim did not come without strings. “It had to be for a charity,” said Strachman, smiling. “And it could be for one night only.”

That night begins at 6:15 pm at Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, with the show itself performed at 7. At 8:30, the gala celebration of the St. George’s Society will take place atop Hearst Tower, celebrating the efforts of Walton himself and Harper Bazaar’s Editor-in-Chief, Glenda Bailey.
