Muscatine murder-suicide leaves 7 dead after husband & dad goes on shooting rampage

Muscatine murder-suicide in Iowa leaves 7 dead (including shooter) after Ryan Willis McFarland goes on shooting rampage killing six family members, including wife, Lesa McFarland and their 2 children. Incident is connected to a domestic dispute. Gunman had McFarland had a criminal record. 

A Muscatine, Iowa man is alleged to have shot and killed six family members before turning the murder weapon on himself on Monday.

Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, is alleged to have fired on his wife, Lesa McFarland, 51, and their two children and another resident along with two adults at two separate locations before taking his own life. The tragedy is reported to have spanned multiple locations across Muscatine on Monday, June 1, 2026.

According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers were first dispatched at approximately 12:12 p.m. to a reported shooting at a residence located at 210 Park Avenue in Muscatine. 

Muscatine murder-suicide victims identified; fundraiser backs surviving son

Police officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the residence and discovered four victims suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene according to a release from the Muscatine, IA Police Department.

Investigators quickly identified the suspected shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine.

Authorities said Ryan McFarland had fled the residence before law enforcement arrived. Officers immediately began searching for him and soon located him on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge.

When officers found McFarland, he was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police and emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two adults found deceased at 2 separate Muscatine locations related to shooter

As detectives continued investigating the initial shooting scene, information emerged suggesting there could be additional victims connected to the incident.

Officers subsequently responded to a residence in the 1500 block of Mill Street, where they discovered an adult male deceased from gunshot wounds. A second adult was also found deceased at nearby business address on Grand Ave. 

According to a commentator on social media, alleging to be related to the mother, Ryan McFarland shot and killed five of Lesa McFarland’s six children.

Authorities believe the violence was connected to a domestic dispute and said all of the victims are believed to have been related to McFarland.

In total, seven people died in the shootings, including the suspect. Officials have not yet publicly released the identities of the remaining victims as family notifications continue.

Of note, officials confirmed McFarland had a criminal record but declined to specify what.

Counselors and support services would be available at Muscatine schools

In a statement released to families and staff, Muscatine Community district officials confirmed that two school district employees and two current students were among those killed during the incident.

In response, the district announced that counselors and support services would be available beginning on Tuesday morning at Muscatine High School, Susan Clark Junior High, Madison Elementary, McKinley Elementary and Franklin Elementary.

Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
