Crystal Royster, Detroit, Michigan mom sentenced to 14 days jail and 18 months probation for calling in 2 bomb threats to her daughter’s school after the girl being barred from performing in school play after calling in sick the day before.

A Detroit mother in Michigan has been sentenced to jail time after making two fake bomb threat calls to her daughter’s school when the child was not allowed to take part in a school play.

Crystal Royster, 42, according to Macomb County prosecutors called in the threats to Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, after her daughter was barred from performing because she had gone home sick earlier that day, in line with school policy.

The hoax threats led on March 12, 2025, to the evacuation of nearly 700 students and staff, triggering a large emergency response from local police and other agencies. No explosives were found, but officials said the incident caused widespread fear and disruption in the community.

Mom must also complete an impulse control class

According to a Facebook release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Royster was on January 8, sentenced to 18 months of probation, including 14 days in jail, including being mandated to complete an impulse control class. She is barred from contacting victims and must notify the school before entering campus grounds.

The jail sentencing and probation follows the parent pleading guilty in November 2025 to the charge of false report or threat of a bomb, CBS News reported. Of note, Royster will receive three days credit for time already served in jail.

Officials reiterated that false bomb threats are serious felony crimes and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
