Kyra Sunshine Scarlet is identified as the unaccounted for woman caught by a ‘freak’ landslide along San Francisco’s Fort Funston Beach. Presumed dead.

A 22-year-old woman who has not been found since a portion of a cliff fell on her in the Bay Area last week is presumed dead.

The woman’s family on Thursday identified her as Kyra Sunshine Scarlet, an Oakley, California resident who was originally from Utah.

Scarlet was walking her dog with a friend along Fort Funston– a section of beach along the San Francisco coast last Friday- when a section of a cliff crumbled, creating a landslide that trapped them beneath the sand, SFGate reported.

Bystanders and up to 60 first responders recovered the dog and Scarlet’s friend, but were unable to locate Scarlet. Rescue attempts were called off after several hours.

Based on witness reports, authorities determined Scarlet was ‘likely buried under tons of soft, heavy sand, and was presumed deceased,’ according to the press release.

By the following day- a high tide that swept the beach, washing away much of the bluff, changing the area where Scarlet was last seen. Authorities at the time believed the unaccounted woman could still be buried in the sand or carried out to sea by the tide.

In a Thursday statement, Scarlet’s family thanked rescue officials and acknowledged that the ‘family’s faith allows for them to be at peace knowing that Kyra Sunshine is in a better place and that they will be reunited in the future.’

‘Kyra Sunshine was a beautiful, sweet, amazing woman … She died in one of her favorite places after hiking with her sweet dog Iris and her dear friend,’ the statement read.

‘The family would like to thank the many public safety agencies that have worked tirelessly to help find Kyra Sunshine, watch over the site and the kindness they have shown the family.’

According to the National Park Service, the landslide appears to be an ‘isolated natural incident’ caused by soft sand and erosion from recent storms.

A GoFundme fundraiser to pledge towards a memorial fund to honor Kyra Sunshine Scarlet’s life had by Friday, EST, morning raised, $3381.
