New York police officers responded to a 911 call in the Bronx at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday to find a 23-year-old woman, identified by police as Nathaly Ramirez and an 8-month-old girl suffering injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated position, according to the NYPD.

The fall is reported to have occurred at 2550 Olinville Ave. in the Bronx around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday morning, the NYPD stated. The infant girl who miraculously survived the fall was identified as Angel Novalty Carrasco-Ramirez.

Both individuals were taken to Jacobi Hospital. The infant is in critical condition, police said. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the NYPD.

The baby girl was identified as the estranged couple’s baby child, the nypost reported.

Police said Carrasco’s close friend went to police and told detectives where Carrasco was hiding. Carrasco was arrested by members of the Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Carrasco leaving the apartment building after the incident. Detectives also recovered flowers inside Ramirez’s apartment and believe Carrasco had brought them in an attempt to reconcile after recent disputes.

It was there after the gesture of reconciliation failed that the ex boyfriend ‘flew into a rage,’ and pushed the victim as she held on to their child off the building balcony. The man then fled the scene, the NYPD stated.

‘I heard someone shouting, ‘Jump!’ It was a male voice,’ neighbor Robin Mendzies told the nypost. ‘Then I heard a big thud and a woman wailing, ‘No, please, no!’ It sounded like she was begging for an inevitable thing not to happen.’

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Police said there was a documented history of domestic violence involving the couple. In January, Carrasco was charged with slapping Ramirez during a dispute involving his ex-girlfriend. Days later, he was charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into Ramirez’s apartment while looking for her.

Carrasco was also previously arrested for allegedly sending threatening text messages to another ex.

The tragedy comes amid Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Ramirez’s photo has now been added to a wall honoring victims of domestic violence.

‘It’s a very painful moment today when we hung up Nathaly,’ said Stephanie McGraw, founder and CEO of WARM, a domestic violence organization in Harlem that works to help victims.

McGraw said her organization would have helped Ramirez and her daughter if they had been contacted.

‘We wouldn’t have asked any questions. We would have went in, we would have packed her up, we would have got her out and got her to safety,’ McGraw said.

Ramirez graduated from Bronx Leadership Academy High School in the Bronx and attended Baruch College. She worked at Lishawn Consulting in Manhattan, where a rep described her as “a rising star” and “very hardworking.”
