Deterrence and accountability to keep streets clear of drunk drivers
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said it is investigating the incident and seeks to determine whether alcohol was served in violation of state law prior to the crash.
Advocates with Sober Streets Movement, an organization made up of families who have lost loved ones in drunk driving crashes, say cases like this highlight ongoing concerns about accountability and underage drinking.
‘Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be harsh enough penalties to deter people from committing these type of crimes,’ said Aracely Rascon, a program coordinator with the group who lost her own child in a drunk driving crash.
Rascon added that incidents like this are happening too often and emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and prevention efforts.
‘It’s not only happening so consistently, but I feel like people are getting so comfortable,’ she told KFOX14.
She also urged the community to make safer choices before getting behind the wheel.
‘Just make smart choices choose to save a life,’ Rascon said.
The Sober Streets Movement is currently advocating for stronger DWI laws and increased accountability.
