They used to be best friends…. A shooting in downtown Athens, Georgia early Saturday morning left two young men dead, one severely injured and a 22-year old Jefferson County man in custody.
Athens-Clarke County Police said that officers responded to the 400 block of North Jackson Street around 2:20 a.m. on March 14.
Police said that three people were shot during the incident, and two of them were later pronounced dead.

The victims were identified as 22-year-old Clayton Adams and 19-year-old Dylan Bentley, 11Alive reported. A third young man, Landon Skinner, 20, who was shot in the eye remained in critical condition.
Arrested was 22-year-old Mark Desousa, a Jefferson resident, who was booked on charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery.
Former best friends
Shanna Duren, Skinner’s mother, said Adams and Bentley were trying to help her son.
‘I call them my heroes, and my heart goes out to their families,’ Duren told WSB-TV. ‘I’m so sorry that they had to endure that. My heart breaks for them. I’m thankful. I feel like they helped my son.’
Duren said her son was expected to undergo further surgery once he’s stabilized. She said that the alleged shooter was her son’s best friend for six years.
Police did not say what led up to the shooting as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now involved.
