An Olive Garden chef has died in an apparent suicide after jumping headfirst into a deep fat fryer at their place of work according to Pennsylvania officials.
The worker, since identified on social media as 34-year-old Williamsport man, David James Ciccarelli, stripped naked before plunging into the hot vat where they suffered catastrophic burn injuries in the kitchen at the chain’s restaurant in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Officers were called to the North Pennsylvania location shortly after 4 p.m, last Friday, January 30 amid reports of a medical emergency. In the 911 recording, a dispatcher can be heard saying, ‘I don’t have a lot of details — people screaming — some kind of a burn victim.’ The dispatcher later told responding officers, ‘A male victim went head first into the fryers.’

Horrified colleagues and customers were heard screaming, with co-workers and at least one customer attempting to intervene as the incident unfolded. A female employee suffered burn injuries while trying to stop the man from further harm, prompting a second ambulance to be dispatched to the scene according to The Smoking Gun.
The cook was transported to a local hospital with severe burns but later died from his injuries, officials said.
Both Olive Garden and a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police described the incident as a suicide attempt and declined to release additional details.
The restaurant temporarily closed following the incident but has since reopened.

An obituary stated the vicitim, David Ciccarelli struggling with mental health challenges.
Stated the obit in part, ‘David was a kind and thoughtful soul whose life was shaped by faith, music, and a deep love of learning. He found joy in singing with residents at The Williamsport Home where he worked for many years. A man of strong faith, he served as a lector and eucharistic minister. He graduated from Lycoming College with a degree in Chemistry and Biology in 2018 and completed the Medical Laboratory Science Program at UPMC in 2024.’
‘A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, for family and close friends on Friday, February 6, 2026 at 10 a.m.
‘In lieu of flowers, a scholarship has been established so that his love for music and singing will be honored.’
The casual dining outlet to date has not publicly addressed the tragedy, including whether the worker had been experiencing mental health woes or had been embroiled in work conflict issues.
Suicide remains a major public health crisis in the United States. According to the CDC, more than 49,000 people died by suicide in 2023, making it one of the leading causes of death nationwide.
