A middle school teacher in Louisiana has been arrested and charged with sex crimes, just months after being named the school’s teacher of the year.
Christie Elizabeth Dunbar Oster, 38, of Lafayette, La., an eighth grade math teacher at Broussard Middle School upon her arrest on Wednesday was charged with indecent behavior with juveniles and carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Lafayette Police said Christie Oster allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a former student, the Acadiana Advocate reported.
Oster was named the school’s 2025-26 Teacher of the Year in September, 2025. According to an LPSS spokesperson, Oster has been placed on leave.
Carnal knowledge of a juvenile in Louisiana is committed when a person who is older than 17 has sexual intercourse with someone who is between 13 and 17 years old, with the age difference more than four years, according to Louisiana state law. If convicted, a person can be fined up to $5,000 and face up to 10 years in prison.
Of intrigue was the reaction of the wife of the school’s principal who took to Facebook to express that the allegations against Christie should not negatively effect anyone else, nor the school, while seemingly implying that the child victims had ‘chosen’ to participate in their exploitation and subjugation.
Can children ever choose or consent to having sex with adults, never mind teachers?

‘What we can do is pray, pray for the victims (consenting or not) , pray for the families affected , pray for the staff and students affected , pray for the ones in charge that they have the strength to help everyone through as needed and don’t forget to help themselves.
‘We can also NOT share the posts , make comments , judge anyone other than the ONE individual responsible for their actions !
‘Life is tough , let’s not make it harder for the innocent by judging , gossiping , chatting , making assumptions !
‘Do the right thing , be kind , pray and move on if it doesn’t concern you !’
Oster remains held in the Lafayette Parish Jail on $50,000 bond.
The Lafayette Police Department continue to investigate.
