Travis Clark, Winchester, Indiana man sets house on fire so he could collect insurance payout to pay off credit card debts that ‘were stressing him out.’

He needed quick money. And then he had a brilliant idea…

An Indiana man is accused of torching his own house because he was ‘stressed and pissed off’ about his financial situation and needed to find a way to pay off his debts.

Travis Clark, 29, is reported to have walked into the Winchester Police Department where he said he wanted to ‘confess to a crime,’ involving him setting his own house on fire in late September in a bid to collect insurance money to help pay off his credit card debt. Shortly after his confession on October 27, Clark was booked into the Randolph County Jail and charged with arson.

‘Stressed and pissed off that he was in debt with credit cards.’

According to court documents cited by FOX59, Clark told police that he was ‘stressed and pissed off that he was in debt with credit cards.’ While speaking with officers, Clark stated that he allegedly set a fire in his home’s laundry room before he went to work in the morning.

During questioning, Clark admitted to attempting a similar scheme before. Court documents stated that Clark told officers that he tried to set fire to his home three years ago for the same reason, but the insurance company did not investigate. The fire in September, Clark said, was investigated (can anyone guess why…?)  Clark further admitted that he had searched ‘how to start a fire’ on his cellphone.

After meeting with an insurance adjuster, Clark allegedly ‘took a butane lighter and torched the wire even more to make it look more convincing for insurance costs,’ court documents stated.

Clark told officers he ‘snapped’ due to his bills ‘piling up.’

Following his arrest, Clark was charged with one count of arson. He posted $1,000 bond shortly after his arrest and was released from jail. Clark is scheduled to make a pretrial conference for Feb. 2, 2026, with his jury trial scheduled for April 8, 2026.
