N.C man sets woman on fire refusing to get him beer

North Carolina man accused of setting a woman on fire at a Sylva residence for not getting him a beer. 

A 56-year-old North Carolina man is facing felony charges for setting a woman on fire after she refused his demands to get him a beer. 

Patrick Tyson is alleged to have sprayed rubbing alcohol on the female victim, the floor and couch where the woman was sitting before lighting the alcohol on fire, causing the woman’s short to be set ablaze.

According to a press release from the Sylva Police Department, officers responded to a domestic dispute on Chipper Curve Road in Sylva just after 7 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 where they were met by the female victim.

Man sprayed rubbing alcohol on woman and couch before setting her on fire

The woman told police that Tyson stated he would set her on fire if she didn’t get him a beer, before igniting the couch with a cigarette lighter, causing both the couch and her shirt to catch fire. Police say the victim’s shirt was burned off her body, with the female victim not sustaining physical injuries. The home suffered smoke damage, burned carpet, and a charred couch. The stove was shattered after Tyson threw an item at it during the incident.

The Sylva Fire Department responded and extinguished the flames. Not immediately clear is the nature of the relationship between Tyson and the female victim.

Serial offender faces litany of felony charges

Tyson following his arrest was charged with:

  • Felony Assault With a Deadly Weapon With Intent to Kill
  • Felony First-Degree Arson
  • Misdemeanor Assault on a Female
  • Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property

 Tyson remains held on a $750,000 secured bond at Jackson County Jail.

He is scheduled to appear in District Court on Dec. 1.
