An American tourist on a school field trip has been accused of throwing out her newborn baby out of a hotel window in Paris, France, leading to the infant’s death.
The child died moments after being thrown out of a hotel window by an un-identified 18 year old American student just after 6am on Monday, local time.
The 18-year-old was part of ‘a group of young people travelling in Europe’, according to the French authorities.
The teenage mother allegedly threw her baby from the second floor of an Ibis Styles hotel ‘with the umbilical cord’, authorities said.
Investigators say the teen mom was suffering from ‘pregnancy denial’ when she gave birth ‘unexpectedly’ at the budget hotel in the French capital.
The baby was wrapped up in a sheet when it was discovered Paris’ 20th arrondissement [district].
The new-born was rushed to the Robert Debre hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival due to the seriousness of her injuries.
The young mother was taken to the same hospital for treatment following childbirth.
Detectives arrested her at the clinic and charged the teen with ‘child murder’, according to French authorities.
The Paris prosecutor’s office told Le Parisien that the child did not survive the fall and succumbed to injuries.
An investigation has been opened for ‘homicide of a minor under 15’, the city’s public prosecutor told the outlet.
The office said that the mother was ‘part of a group of young adults travelling in Europe’.
They said she had also been taken to hospital for an operation. She was taken into custody on site, the office said.
The baby was taken to a hospital in the 19th arrondissement.
Witnesses were reportedly ‘alerted by screams’ before calling the emergency services, according to Paris Match.
The baby was said to have been taken ‘in absolute emergency and with a life-threatening prognosis’ to the hospital before being declared dead.
‘The investigation is underway and the precise circumstances of this tragedy remain to be established,’ a person close to the case told the outlet.
The case is to be investigated as a homicide of a minor under the age of 15, according to French prosecutors, Le Figaro reported.
The Ibis Styles is a three-star budget hotel off Rue de la Croix Saint-Simon. Rooms go for around $100 USD on average per night.
