As authorities investigate a ‘mass casualty incident’ which led to the deaths of 12 and at least 35 injured when a SUV driver deliberately plowed into revellers amid New Years celebrations along Bourbon st, New Orleans, sleuths on the web are now asking about a black flag seen at the back of the white pick up truck, before police immediately removing the item.

With the identity of the perpetrator (to date described as a white male- see image of perpetrator below) yet to be made public and who was shot dead by police after alighting from his SUV and shooting into the crowd, questions have been asked whether the episode was terrorist motivated and if so, why and on who’s behalf?

SUV truck used in Bourbon st attack came from Mexico two days ago

Of note, authorities said the white ‘Ford’ pick up truck which barrelled along Bourbon and Canal st just on 3.15 am after the New Year had rolled in, had Texas license plates; LZ-1575. The owner and registration of the vehicle has yet to be established.

The truck used to kill 10 in the massacre came into the US from Mexico through Eagle Pass, Texas, two days ago, Fox News reported.

The unnamed gunman was killed in a shootout with officers after he exited his vehicle and started shooting, injuring two NOLA police officers who are in stable condition.

Authorities investigating the ‘mass casualty incident’ say the driver showed ‘very intentional behavior’ after driving into crowds before they got out and fired a weapon.

Pictures posted on social media, centered on the mystery black flag scene at the back of the perpetrator’s white SUV truck, which was removed by police after the driver gunman’s shooting death. It appeared the unknown flag was attached to a pole, possibly connected to video surveillance equipment.

Posted another: What is this flag on the back of the New Orleans Bourbon Street terrorist’s truck? They covered up right away

Wrote another: Notice the Black Flag on the back of the truck which reporters and others are indicating it is an ISIS Flag.

Posted another: Well, it certainly looks like and appears to be a black flag with some sort of white writing on it, and the public disservice officials were quick to roll it up so that the public can’t see it.’

Offered one user in a plausible explanation: ‘I’m guessing it was a 360° cameras with a flag under it and since it was a camera it was seized right away by police to preserve any video evidence. Makes sense why the crime scene would have changed.’

In a joint press conference with city officials, the FBI announced they are taking over the investigation. Mayor LaToya Cantrell opened the press conference by calling the incident a ‘terrorist attack’, but representatives from the FBI declined to call it that in the early stages of the investigation.

Bourbon Street, famous for its many bars and clubs, has reportedly been shut down while investigators work the scene. People are advised to stay away from the area.

No known motive was presently known into what authorities are now exploring as a deliberate act of terrorism.
