Edward Asencio charged with the strangulation death of his mother, Ana Asencio more than a year after her lifeless body was found in her UWS apartment. 84 year old Manhattan woman struggled with dementia.

A 51 year old NYC man was arrested and charged with the death of his 84-year-old mother, more than a year after police found her dead inside her Upper West Side home, according to cops and sources.

Edward Asencio, 51, was busted on Thursday and charged with manslaughter and second-degree assault charges for allegedly killing his mother, Ana Asencio, whose lifeless body was discovered face-up in the bedroom of her W. 93 St. apartment at 9:57 p.m. on July 17, 2023, according to police.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Asencio’s death a homicide on Jan. 15 after an autopsy revealed that bruising to her neck and injuries to her head resulted from strangulation.

Police found Ana Asencio after getting a call from a worried relative asking officers to check on her. First responders declared her her dead at the scene.

The victim – who had a pacemaker – had bruising on most of her face when police found her, according to sources.

‘She didn’t deserve this,’ Migdalia Rodriguez, 72, told the nydailynews. ‘She wasn’t in her right mind but she was a lovely lady.’

Asencio was a retired public school teacher who suffered from dementia and lived with her son in the apartment, which was filthy, Rodriguez said.

‘Her son lives here but she was really all alone,’ the neighbor said. ‘I would knock on the door once in a while to see if she’s OK.’

Rodriguez and her mother would bring Asencio food and help her to the bathroom.

‘Her legs were swollen,’ said the neighbor, ‘she needed help to get around.

‘The apartment was always a mess,’ she added. ‘It’s a miracle it doesn’t smell.’

It remained unclear what assistance, if any, was afforded to the elderly woman.

No arrests were made until Thursday, some 15 months after the 84 year old’s body was found.

Not immediately clear is how cops came to eventually link the son to the 84 year old woman’s death and whether the man had confessed to her strangling murder.
