Texas DoorDash delivery driver fired for swearing over 25% tip on $20 pizza in scene caught on viral video as social media responds. Customer id as Lacey Purciful of Kempner.

What if employers just paid their staff better – like they do in most other Western states in the world?

A Texas DoorDash outlet has fired one of their drivers after viral video caught  the driver swearing at a female customer after she gave him a 25 percent tip on her $20 pizza delivery.

Lacey Purciful, 38, was left stunned after Corey, the worker, suggested someone living in a $500,000 home like herself should have been more generous.

‘f*** you’

Instead of getting aggressive, Purciful thanked Corey and told him ‘you’re welcome’ before closing the door, despite the delivery driver’s passive aggressive attitude.

In the video, captured by the family’s Vivint camera in Kempner, Texas, the mom-of-two answered the door.

The un-named man, wearing khaki shorts and a dark t-shirt, pulled the pizza box out of its protective box and handed it to the woman, who said ‘thank you.’

The delivery man then said: ‘You’re welcome, um I just want to say it’s a nice house for a $5 tip.’

Purciful caught off guard by the man’s comment retorted, ‘you’re welcome,’ to which the  driver responded: ‘f*** you’ a walked away.

Online viewers of the video, which Purciful posted to her TikTok account and Facebook page, were overwhelmingly supportive of the tipper in this case.

‘Tipping is out of control. 5 on 20 is more than enough,’ wrote one user.

Others encouraged Purciful to get in touch with Doordash, the service she had used for the delivery.

Purciful said she did contact the delivery company, which she also clarified she pays a monthly fee for, in addition to any extra service fees.

DoorDash responds

DoorDash spokesperson told the dailymail: ‘Respectfully asking for a tip is acceptable but abusing or harassing someone is never acceptable.

‘We’ve removed this Dasher from our platform and reached out to the customer.

‘Our rules exist to help ensure everyone who uses our platform – Dashers, customers, merchants – have a safe and enjoyable experience.

‘We expect everyone to treat others with respect and we will enforce our rules fairly and consistently.’

The episode needless to say elicited a wide bevy of responses on social media.

Wrote one person: ‘WTF?! Obviously he don’t even need the money! Because someone who needs the money/job wouldn’t be risking it over a tip!

‘And you ordered $20 worth of food, what did he expect? A $20 tip?

Gig workers pitted against customers

Posted another, ‘These people seem to forget; tipping is optional and given for good service. Tipping $5 for delivering a small order with a bad attitude was more than generous.’

Stated another: ‘Thing with delivery gigs is that the driver is using their own car and gas, and generally the pay from DoorDash etc is like $2-3. So the tips are essential. But this tip was fine, unless it was a far drive (like 10 miles). No matter what, this driver’s reaction is NOT OK! Ever.’

Other online commenters lamented the exorbitantly high cost of having anything delivered these days, and how delivery fees are likely driving down tip numbers.

‘Pisses me off that my $18 order gets an additional service fee and a delivery fee that is not a tip. So by the time all is said and done with taxes and fees, with my tip my $18 order is now $32-$35. Sucks for the workers but these fees are hurting everyone but the corporations,’ wrote one Reddit user.

‘I couldn’t believe this last time I tried to delivery, the pizza+tax, then a $2.99 fee, and a $4.99 fee, and they said neither of those were tips for the driver. It was going to be over $40 for a pizza, soda, and bread sticks. I ended just driving to another restaurant out of spite,’ wrote another.

While another reflected: ‘His problem is that he expected to be tipped off the cost of the house not the cost of the food.’

Added another, ‘I guess he was expecting you to give him the house as a tip.’
