Zika Virus Spreading: While not classified as an outbreak, the emergence of the virus has potential to cause health woes unless we understand it.
The Zika virus has been creating headlines all over the world this past year. After an outbreak in certain parts of Africa, the virus is now spreading across Europe and the United States. While the spread of the Zika virus in the US is not classified as an outbreak, according to the University of Arizona’s Master of Public Health department, it is critical that we understand more about the virus and how to stop it from spreading further.
The Zika virus is especially dangerous for pregnant women, since the virus can infect fetuses and cause birth defects. At the same time, the virus can now infect adults through transmission of bodily fluid. Some recorded cases have confirmed that Zika also spreads through mosquito bites.
Taking the time to understand more about the virus is critical. The Targeting Zika infographic from the University of Arizona is a great place to start.
