A baby boy presumed dead has gone on to wake up moments before he was set to be cremated at a Chinese funeral parlor. The child had been pronounced dead two days earlier by a hospital morgue.
The alarm only came to be raised after shocked funeral workers came to hear the baby crying as measures were being taken to cremate the child who was born not one month earlier with gross deformities.
At the time parents of the baby boy had agreed to end his medical treatment at Anhui Provincial Children’s hospital. It is not at present understood whether the parents were coaxed into this decision or whether they had willingly made the decision to allow the hospital to end the boy’s life.
Since the discovery, and perhaps reacting to local media consternation, authorities have gone on to revoke the license of the doctor who mistakenly declared the newborn boy dead.
A nursing worker who also happened to be on duty at the time was deemed deceased was along with the doctor held responsible for the incident and were suspended and laid off respectively, according to the hospital.
Went on to tell a hospital staff member: ‘Because the baby still had life signs, we continued to give him transfusion to maintain his life for humanitarian reasons,’
Local media agency Xinhua went on to tell the baby had been born with a ‘congenital respiratory system malformation.’
It is not understood at present if policy towards children born with deformities is to thwart them the necessary care needed.
The boy remains in critical condition.
